The Tao is a fundamental concept of Taoism, an indigenous Chinese philosophy and religion founded by Laozi around the 6th century BCE. When Taoist monks talk about the Tao, they are talking about the “natural order” of the universe with the goal to live in harmony with nature. In Taoism, Yin and Yang are the core model for how the universe functions, representing the dynamic balance of opposites that arise from the Tao.
* Yin represents the Dark. It is associated with femininity, cold, rest, shadows, and passivity.
* Yang represents The Light.
It is associated with masculinity, heat, action, brightness, and growth. In Taoism, these are not opposing forces of “good vs. evil” but interdependent ones. One cannot exist without the other; they are two sides of the same coin that constantly transform into each other, a concept Alan Watts loved to talk about in his lectures, very much needed now.
